Traditional Braves with SESS-AI 2.0 Review

Strategy RPGs live and die by two things: the intelligence of their systems and the creativity they demand from the player. Traditional Braves with SESS-AI 2.0, published by Daidai Inc, is a remake that clearly understands this truth. Rather than simply polishing visuals or adding a few convenience features, the developers have rebuilt large portions of the original design around their upgraded thinking engine, SESS-AI 2.0. The result is a stern, demanding tactical experience that feels refreshingly old-school while still brimming with modern ambition.

A Thoughtful Remake, Not a Repaint

Right from the opening hours it becomes clear that this is not a lazy remaster. The remake introduces meaningful structural changes: a brand-new unit named Lity, redesigned battle maps, and a complete replacement of the previous Support Card system with something called Cheer Magic. Even guest characters can now be unlocked via password, a charmingly retro touch that fits the game’s personality.

The most significant upgrade, however, is the adoption of SESS-AI 2.0. Daidai Inc has built its reputation on this in-house decision-making program, and here it is the star of the show. Enemies no longer behave like predictable chess pieces waiting to be harvested for experience. They probe weaknesses, retreat when outmatched, and occasionally set traps that feel almost human in their cruelty. For veterans of the original Traditional Braves, the difference is immediate and occasionally shocking.

Difficulty with Teeth

The developers openly state that this entry is harder than Traditional Tactics with SESS-AI 2.0, and they are not exaggerating. This is a game aimed squarely at “intelligent players,” the kind who enjoy studying mechanics as much as watching flashy animations. New high-class enemy units appear early and hit like trucks. The introduction of the Jammer unit, capable of creating disruptive Jamming Areas, forces you to rethink comfortable strategies. Even something as simple as positioning healers becomes a nerve-wracking puzzle.

Cheer Magic users are no longer rare bosses but common threats scattered across many floors. Their buffs can transform an ordinary skirmish into a desperate survival scenario in a single turn. Victory rarely comes from raw power; it comes from reading the battlefield, predicting AI behavior, and occasionally sacrificing a beloved ally for the greater good. Frustrating? Absolutely. But also deeply satisfying.

A Classic Tale, Simply Told

The narrative is deliberately straightforward. You play as Prince Natri, who has already passed the test to become the next king. Instead of celebrating, his mother Queen Silica orders him to undertake the trial again, this time accompanied by a young woman named Helim. The premise has the flavor of a fairy tale — gentle, slightly mysterious, and more concerned with themes of growth than political intrigue.

Don’t expect cinematic cutscenes or hours of dialogue. The story functions mainly as a framework for the tactical campaign. Yet there is a warm sincerity to the writing that suits the game’s traditional spirit. Natri and Helim develop a quiet camaraderie, and occasional side conversations give just enough personality to keep you invested between brutal battles.

Systems over Spectacle

At its core, Traditional Braves with SESS-AI 2.0 is a team-based, turn-based simulation RPG with simple but unforgiving rules. Maps are grid-based, objectives are clear, and randomness is kept to a minimum. What complicates everything is Cheer Magic — the central mechanic around which the entire design revolves.

Unlike the old Support Cards, Cheer Magic requires careful timing and positioning. Buffing the wrong unit at the wrong moment can doom an entire formation. The game repeatedly emphasizes that inspiration is the most important weapon, and it means it. There were battles I replayed half a dozen times, not because the numbers were unfair, but because I had failed to see the elegant solution hiding in plain sight.

Map redesigns deserve praise as well. Terrain now matters in subtle ways, encouraging flanking maneuvers and defensive lines. Combined with the unpredictable AI, even familiar scenarios from the original release feel brand new.

SESS-AI 2.0 – The Real Protagonist

Calling the AI a “feature” almost feels disrespectful; it is closer to a co-designer. Version 2.0.5 and later bring a level of behavioral variety rarely seen in indie strategy titles. Enemies coordinate, protect key units, and occasionally abandon objectives to hunt down your Cheer Magic users. I caught myself muttering “clever” under my breath more than once.

Of course, brilliance can be a double-edged sword. There are moments when the AI’s ruthlessness borders on oppressive, particularly in longer missions where a single mistake snowballs into disaster. Casual players may find the experience exhausting. But for the target audience — tacticians who enjoy being outwitted — this is pure gold.

Rough Edges on the Battlefield

Not everything is perfect. The presentation remains modest, with functional but plain visuals and minimal animation. Menus can feel clunky, and newcomers may struggle with tutorials that assume familiarity with the series. Difficulty spikes occasionally resemble brick walls rather than learning curves.

Yet these shortcomings are strangely part of the charm. The game feels like a handcrafted puzzle box built by designers who care more about systems than spectacle. If you can meet it on those terms, the rewards are immense.

Verdict – A Thinking Player’s Treasure

Traditional Braves with SESS-AI 2.0 is not interested in holding your hand or flattering your ego. It challenges, provokes, and occasionally humiliates — and that is exactly why it succeeds. Daidai Inc has delivered a remake that respects its roots while pushing its signature AI technology to bold new heights.

For strategy purists, this is one of the most engaging tactical experiences in recent memory. For everyone else, it may feel like a stern professor who never gives extra credit.
