SWORN is a dark, atmospheric action-roguelike that plunges players into a twisted Arthurian legend where Camelot has fallen under a corrupt and cursed King Arthur’s brutal reign. Developed by Windwalk Games and published by Team17 in September 2025, SWORN blends fast-paced combat, deep character customisation, and cooperative multiplayer into a gritty narrative that channels the spirit of classic myths through modern roguelike mechanics.

Setting and Story

At its core, SWORN is the tale of a mysterious entity known as the Soulforged, a formless Fae warrior empowered with the rare ability of rebirth, who is the only hope for overthrowing the embittered King Arthur and his corrupted Knights of the Round Table. The story twists the familiar Arthurian mythos into a darker, more mystical tale where Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail leads to chaos as his betrayal of the fae lords curses him and his knights, warping Camelot into a cruel shadow of its former glory.

Character classes vary widely—from the agile and lethal Vigilante, the stalwart and powerful Rook, the adaptable Monk, to the fragile but devastating spellcaster Spectre. Each offers distinct playstyles that cater to different combat preferences, from quick dashes and precise strikes to heavy blows or ranged magical devastation.

Combat is fast and punishing, emphasizing timing, positioning, and build optimization. The game boasts over 200 “Blessings of the Fae,” unique buffs and abilities that let players customize and refine their skills and tactics endlessly. The blend of weapon types, skills, and synergistic blessings encourages experimentation, making every run feel fresh and rewarding.

Boss fights against Arthur’s twisted knights combine demanding mechanics with dramatic flair, offering memorable challenges that require mastery of the game’s core systems. The roguelike’s meta-progression rewards continual play, granting unlocks that improve survivability and combat potential in subsequent runs.

Visuals and Audio

The graphical style embraces a bold, comic-book aesthetic heavily influenced by artist Mike Mignola, lending SWORN a moody, stylised look that deftly balances gothic darkness with vivid character design. Environments feel rich and atmospheric, capturing the decrepit yet enchanted world of a corrupted Camelot.

Audio design is a standout, combining medieval-inspired melodies with sudden bursts of heavy metal guitar riffs during intense battles, creating a compelling soundtrack that heightens both tension and excitement. A key highlight is SWORN’s fluid four-player co-op, allowing friends to team up and strategise together. With its steep difficulty curve, SWORN doesn’t hold players’ hands—death is frequent, and learning enemy attack patterns is crucial. Though deaths can feel punishing, the generous checkpointing system and meaningful meta-progression alleviate frustration by rewarding incremental mastery and build enhancement.

The wide variety of character classes and hundreds of blessings ensure that no two playthroughs are alike. This, combined with randomized enemy encounters and level layouts, encourages continuous experimentation and return play.
