No More Slimes!! Review

There is something wonderfully satisfying about watching a screen full of enemies disappear in spectacular fashion. You don’t necessarily need an elaborate story, a sprawling world or a dozen complicated systems to create that feeling. Sometimes all you really need is a ridiculous number of squishy creatures, a few increasingly ridiculous weapons and the knowledge that, with every battle, you are becoming just a little bit more powerful. No More Slimes!! understands that simple pleasure perfectly, wrapping it in colourful pixel art and an addictive progression system that makes it remarkably easy to lose track of time.

Developed and published by Minimum Studio Corp., No More Slimes!! throws players into Mialut Gorge, a once peaceful location that has been completely overrun by a mysterious army of slimes. Your job is suitably straightforward: destroy the hordes, collect the rewards, become stronger and eventually discover what is behind the invasion. It is the sort of premise that knows not to get in its own way, because the real attraction is not the mystery surrounding the slime invasion. It is the glorious moment when an enemy that once took several hits to defeat suddenly evaporates under a rain of meteors, lightning and other wonderfully excessive attacks.

A Gorge Full of Trouble

At its heart, No More Slimes!! is an incremental action game built around the simple pleasure of making numbers go up. You enter an arena, face waves of increasingly troublesome slimes and collect the resources they leave behind. Those resources are then poured into upgrades that make your character stronger, faster and considerably more capable of turning the next horde into colourful paste.

That progression is perhaps the game’s greatest strength. Early encounters can make you feel surprisingly vulnerable, particularly when the screen begins filling with bouncing enemies from every direction. Stick with it, however, and the difference becomes obvious. Weapons that once felt underpowered begin tearing through entire groups, attack speeds increase and special abilities become devastating tools capable of wiping away huge portions of the battlefield in seconds.

There is a particular satisfaction in returning to an earlier challenge after you’ve invested in your character. Enemies that previously represented a genuine threat suddenly become little more than moving targets waiting to be obliterated. It is a familiar progression loop, but No More Slimes!! knows exactly how to make it feel rewarding, and there is always another upgrade waiting just beyond the next battle.

Simple Controls, Serious Chaos

The controls are deliberately uncomplicated, allowing the game to get straight to the fun. You aren’t wrestling with complex combinations or trying to remember an enormous list of abilities. Instead, the focus is on movement, positioning and knowing when to unleash your more powerful attacks.

That simplicity becomes increasingly important as the number of enemies on screen grows. Slimes bounce, swarm and close in from different directions, forcing you to keep moving while looking for opportunities to unleash an area attack. There is a nice rhythm to it, with basic attacks steadily doing their work while you wait for the perfect opportunity to call down something considerably more destructive.

Then the screen explodes.

Lightning crackles through the crowd, boomerangs ricochet between enemies, frozen slimes become temporarily helpless and meteors come crashing down with wonderfully excessive force. The visual effects are bright and energetic without completely drowning out what is happening, although later encounters can certainly become spectacularly busy. It is the kind of chaos that feels rewarding rather than stressful because you can see the results of all those upgrades happening right in front of you.

Building Your Own Monster

Where No More Slimes!! becomes more interesting is in its approach to character development. The game doesn’t simply hand you a linear upgrade path and tell you to keep spending your resources. Instead, it gives you several different ways to shape your character, allowing you to focus on attack power, attack speed and special abilities depending on how you want to play.

The skill tree provides the foundation for these decisions, but cards and relics add another layer of customisation. Finding combinations that complement one another can turn a perfectly adequate character into an absolute menace. A build focused on rapid attacks will feel very different from one built around devastating special abilities, and experimenting with those differences gives the progression system considerably more life.

This is particularly useful because the game encourages experimentation rather than demanding that you discover one perfect build and stick with it forever. There is something enjoyable about trying a different combination simply because you want to see what happens. Sometimes the result is brilliant, sometimes it is merely adequate, but the process itself becomes part of the fun.

Call in the Mercenaries

The mercenary system adds another welcome wrinkle to the formula. Instead of fighting completely alone, you can recruit a colourful collection of interdimensional allies who provide additional attacks and abilities. These companions can freeze enemies, unleash meteor strikes and cover large areas, giving you another way to control the increasingly crowded battlefield.

The mercenaries aren’t simply cosmetic companions either. Choosing which ones to develop and how their abilities work alongside your own build can have a meaningful impact on your effectiveness. A mercenary capable of freezing a group of enemies can create breathing room when things become hectic, while another specialising in area damage can help clear the screen when the slime population starts getting out of hand.

It adds a nice sense of teamwork to what could otherwise have been an entirely solitary experience. You remain the star of the show, but watching your hired allies work alongside your increasingly powerful character makes the later battles feel like a small army going to war against an army of gelatinous invaders.

The Joy of Watching Numbers Grow

There is no pretending that No More Slimes!! is reinventing the genre. Its fundamental gameplay loop is extremely familiar, and anyone who has spent time with arena survival games or incremental action titles will know exactly what to expect. Fight enemies, collect resources, upgrade yourself and repeat the process with increasingly powerful opponents.

The difference is in how efficiently the game delivers that loop. There is very little unnecessary padding, and battles are designed to provide quick bursts of action rather than demanding enormous time commitments. That makes No More Slimes!! particularly easy to pick up when you have twenty minutes to spare, although the danger is that those twenty minutes can very quickly become an hour.

The game even seems to understand the strange psychological pleasure of checking your statistics after a particularly successful run. How much stronger have you become? How quickly can you destroy that enemy now? Can you squeeze a little more damage from your current build? These are not profound questions, but they are precisely the sort of questions that keep incremental games ticking over in your head after you’ve stopped playing.

A Squishy Visual Treat

Visually, No More Slimes!! goes for cute rather than intimidating. Its 2D pixel art gives the world a colourful personality, while the slimes themselves are suitably soft, bouncy and cheerful considering the terrible fate you are about to inflict upon them.

There is a pleasing contrast between the harmless appearance of the enemies and the sheer violence of your attacks. A screen full of cute little slimes can suddenly become a storm of lightning, explosions and falling meteors, and that contrast gives the action its charm. It never feels particularly grim despite the sheer number of creatures being destroyed.

The effects also do a good job of selling your progression. As your arsenal improves, your attacks become increasingly spectacular, giving you a visual reminder that your investment is paying off. There are moments when the screen becomes almost comically busy, but that is part of the appeal. No More Slimes!! wants you to feel powerful, and it isn’t shy about showing you exactly how powerful you’ve become.

The Grind That Never Feels Like a Chore

The biggest potential weakness is also one of the game’s defining characteristics. There is only so much novelty you can squeeze from fighting waves of similar enemies, and eventually the repetition does begin to show. Those looking for a substantial narrative adventure or a constantly changing collection of environments may find the experience a little thin once the initial excitement has settled.

For players who enjoy incremental progression, however, that repetition is much less of a problem. The entire purpose is to become stronger and see how far that strength can take you. Every upgrade makes the next run more enjoyable, every new card offers another possibility and every successful combination gives you a reason to try another round.

It is the gaming equivalent of eating one more biscuit when you know you probably shouldn’t. You tell yourself you’ll stop after the next upgrade, then the next weapon enhancement catches your attention. Before you know it, you’ve spent another hour watching numbers rise and slimes disappear, wondering quite where the afternoon went.

Verdict

No More Slimes!! doesn’t need to pretend that it is something it isn’t. It is a colourful, uncomplicated and thoroughly enjoyable action game built around the eternal appeal of becoming ridiculously powerful. The combat is accessible, the progression is satisfying and the combination of skill trees, cards, relics and mercenaries gives the simple premise more depth than you might initially expect.

Its greatest achievement is the way it makes progression feel tangible. You can see your character becoming stronger, watch weapons evolve and feel the difference when an attack that once struggled against a handful of enemies suddenly wipes out half the screen. That feedback loop is addictive in precisely the way these games need to be, and the cheerful presentation makes the experience feel more like a stress reliever than a serious battle for survival.

There are limits to how long the formula can remain fresh, and players looking for enormous variety may eventually find themselves wishing for more enemy types, environments or mechanical surprises. Even so, No More Slimes!! delivers exactly the sort of uncomplicated fun it promises. It is cute, chaotic and surprisingly difficult to put down, making it an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys arena survival games and the irresistible satisfaction of watching a carefully constructed build turn a seemingly impossible horde into a shower of colourful loot.
