Stellar Blade Complete Edition Review

There is something immediately striking about Stellar Blade. It is a game that understands the appeal of a spectacular action-adventure, but beneath its beautifully rendered characters, monstrous enemies and explosive battles lies a surprisingly compelling journey through a world that has lost almost everything. Developed by Shift Up, this science-fiction adventure takes players to a devastated Earth where humanity’s future hangs in the balance. The Complete Edition brings together the original campaign and a substantial collection of additional content, including the crossover collaborations with NieR and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, making it the most comprehensive way to experience EVE’s fight for survival.

The story begins with humanity on the brink of extinction. After mysterious creatures known as the Naytiba devastate Earth, the surviving population escapes to a colony in outer space. EVE, a member of the 7th Airborne Squad, is sent back to the planet with a mission to reclaim humanity’s former home. It is a straightforward objective on the surface, but the deeper she ventures into the ruins of civilisation, the more complicated the truth becomes.

What initially appears to be a fairly familiar tale of humanity fighting back against an overwhelming enemy gradually develops into something more mysterious. Fragments of the past, unexpected discoveries and uncomfortable revelations challenge EVE’s understanding of the mission she has been given. There are familiar science-fiction ideas at work, and the narrative does not always reach the emotional heights it seems to be aiming for, but there is enough intrigue to keep the journey moving. More importantly, the world itself gives players plenty of reasons to uncover what happened.

Combat That Demands Your Attention

If there is one area where Stellar Blade truly excels, it is combat. This is an action game that rewards patience, timing and an understanding of your opponent, rather than simply encouraging players to hammer the attack button until something falls over. EVE’s movements are fluid and responsive, with attacks flowing into combinations that feel wonderfully satisfying when executed correctly. There is a real sense of weight behind her strikes, and the visual impact of a particularly effective sequence makes every successful encounter feel rewarding.

The defensive mechanics are just as important as the offensive ones. Perfect Parries and Perfect Dodges form the backbone of the combat system, allowing players to avoid incoming attacks, disrupt enemy patterns and create opportunities for devastating counter-attacks. Learning to recognise enemy movements is essential, particularly when facing larger Naytiba creatures with more complex attack sequences. At first, the timing can feel demanding, but once the mechanics click, battles become an enjoyable dance between aggression and restraint.

There is a particular satisfaction in successfully parrying a series of incoming attacks and turning the enemy’s aggression against them. Rather than simply reacting to whatever happens, you begin to anticipate movements and understand when it is safe to commit to an attack. Boss encounters make excellent use of these mechanics, often demanding that players learn patterns and remain composed under pressure. Victory feels earned because the game expects you to improve rather than simply handing you success.

EVE also has access to a range of powerful abilities that add further depth to the action. Beta Energy attacks provide opportunities to unleash devastating techniques, while additional skills and upgrades allow players to develop their preferred combat style. The combination of quick blade strikes, defensive counters and more powerful special abilities gives encounters a pleasing rhythm. There is enough variety to keep battles interesting without making the controls unnecessarily complicated.

More Than Just a Pretty Blade

The drone accompanying EVE adds another useful layer to the combat system, offering ranged attacks that complement her close-quarters abilities. This helps prevent encounters from becoming entirely focused on swordplay, particularly when facing enemies better engaged from a distance. The ability to switch between different forms of attack gives players more options and serves as a welcome reminder that effective combat is about understanding the situation rather than relying on a single technique.

Outside the battles, exploration offers a different pace. While some areas follow a more linear structure, locations such as the Wasteland and Great Desert provide larger spaces to investigate. These environments contain hidden resources, optional activities and opportunities to discover more about the world. Grappling, wall-running and environmental puzzles add variety to the journey, although exploration is generally at its strongest when it rewards curiosity rather than simply sending players on another collection task.

There is a decent balance between the main storyline and optional distractions. Players can concentrate on progressing through the campaign or spend additional time investigating the surrounding areas and improving EVE’s equipment. Collecting resources and upgrading abilities can make a meaningful difference, particularly when preparing for tougher encounters. The game does a good job of making these activities feel connected to the wider adventure rather than simply adding busywork.

Character customisation is another considerable attraction. EVE has access to a wide selection of outfits, accessories and equipment options, allowing players to change her appearance and tailor certain aspects of her performance. The Nano Suits are particularly eye-catching, offering plenty of visual variety throughout the adventure. While some players will naturally be more interested in the combat upgrades, others will happily spend time collecting different looks and experimenting with the available options.

A Complete Package

The Complete Edition is particularly appealing because it brings together the original experience and a substantial amount of additional content. Rather than requiring players to track down separate updates and downloadable content, this release offers a more convenient package for anyone approaching the game for the first time. It includes the crossover content from NieR and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, alongside additional outfits and other post-launch additions. Some content becomes available only after progressing through the main story, so not everything is immediately accessible from the opening moments.

The NieR collaboration is a particularly welcome inclusion. Given the similarities in their science-fiction settings and their shared interest in questions surrounding humanity, artificial life and identity, the crossover feels like a natural fit. It gives fans of both games something extra to enjoy, while the Goddess of Victory: NIKKE content provides another opportunity to expand EVE’s wardrobe. These collaborations are more than a footnote in the package, helping make the Complete Edition feel like a celebration of the game’s wider appeal.

There is also plenty for players who finish the main campaign and want to continue. Boss Challenge mode offers an opportunity to revisit some of the game’s most demanding encounters without having to work through the entire adventure again. New Game+ provides further progression opportunities, while additional challenges and unlockables give experienced players reasons to return. The inclusion of these extras makes a substantial difference to the overall value, especially for anyone who enjoys mastering an action game’s combat systems.

The Complete Edition is not simply about adding more costumes, either. Its collection of additional content gives the game a longer life beyond the main story, and the opportunity to tackle challenging encounters again is particularly appealing. Players who enjoy learning boss patterns and refining their techniques will find plenty to keep them occupied. It is a substantial package, and one that feels designed to reward those who want to spend more time with EVE and the world of Stellar Blade.

A Ruined Earth Worth Exploring

Visually, Stellar Blade is a striking achievement. Its interpretation of a post-apocalyptic Earth combines desolation with beauty, creating environments that are often as memorable as the battles themselves. Ruined city streets, abandoned structures and mysterious landscapes provide a convincing backdrop for humanity’s struggle, while the Naytiba designs bring a wealth of grotesque imagination to the proceedings. There is a strong contrast between the remnants of civilisation and the strange creatures that now occupy the planet.

Character presentation is another obvious highlight. EVE and the supporting cast are rendered with considerable detail, and the animation gives the combat an impressive sense of movement. Enemy designs are varied and often genuinely unsettling, particularly when larger creatures appear and transform an otherwise routine encounter into a serious test of skill. The visual spectacle is not merely there to look impressive; it helps establish the scale of the threat facing humanity.

The environments also benefit from strong lighting and atmospheric detail. There are moments when the ruined world looks almost beautiful, despite the devastation that has taken place. This contrast gives exploration a melancholy quality, reminding players that the planet was once home to millions of people. It is an effective way of communicating the tragedy of humanity’s situation without relying entirely on dialogue and exposition.

A Soundtrack That Stays With You

The audio presentation deserves particular praise. The soundtrack blends sweeping vocal arrangements, atmospheric melodies and energetic electronic music to create a sound that suits the game’s science fiction setting perfectly. Exploration often benefits from more reflective compositions, allowing the player to absorb the environment’s atmosphere, while boss encounters bring a noticeable increase in intensity. The music adds considerably to the emotional weight of important moments, even when the narrative itself occasionally struggles to deliver the same impact.

Combat sound effects are equally effective. Blade strikes have a satisfying punch, enemy attacks carry an appropriate sense of danger, and the various abilities sound suitably powerful when unleashed. The audio cues also help communicate what is happening during encounters, which is particularly useful when players are concentrating on timing their defensive moves. It is a polished presentation that makes the action feel even more immediate.

The Verdict

Stellar Blade Complete Edition is an excellent action-adventure that shows how satisfying a well-designed combat system can be. Its emphasis on precise parries, evasive manoeuvres and carefully timed attacks creates encounters that reward practice and patience. EVE is an enjoyable protagonist to control, the Naytiba provide memorable challenges, and the variety of abilities and equipment gives players plenty of opportunities to develop their preferred approach.

The narrative is perhaps the one area where the experience falls slightly short of its ambitions. Although the mystery surrounding Earth’s destruction provides a compelling reason to keep exploring, some of the story’s ideas feel familiar and do not always receive the emotional development they deserve. There are also moments when exploration and optional activities can interrupt the momentum of the main adventure, but these are relatively minor complaints in an otherwise impressive package.

What makes Stellar Blade so enjoyable is the confidence with which it delivers its action. The combat feels carefully constructed, the presentation is consistently impressive, and the soundtrack is the sort of thing that stays in your head long after switching off the console. More importantly, the Complete Edition gives players plenty of reasons to keep returning, with its additional challenges, New Game+ content and crossover collaborations providing substantial extra value.

Shift Up has delivered a memorable science-fiction adventure that understands the importance of making every encounter feel exciting. It may not reinvent the genre’s storytelling conventions, but when the blades are drawn and the Naytiba come charging, it is difficult not to get caught up in the spectacle. For fans of character action games, this is an experience well worth making time for, and the Complete Edition is a superb way to enjoy everything EVE’s journey has to offer.
