OVER REQUIEMZ Review

There is something wonderfully unsettling about taking a story as familiar as The Wizard of Oz and throwing it into a world where innocence has been replaced by death sentences, dangerous criminals and the ever-present possibility that trusting the wrong person could be fatal. OVER REQUIEMZ does exactly that, transforming the familiar yellow brick road into something considerably darker and far more emotionally complicated. What begins with a high school student becoming lost in Oz quickly develops into a gothic tale of survival, morality, guilt and romance, with each new revelation making the world feel a little less safe. It is an otome visual novel with plenty of darkness in its heart, but beneath all the misery lies a surprisingly hopeful story about people who have lost their way.

You play as Yuhiru, an ordinary high school student whose life takes an extraordinary turn when she finds herself transported to Oz. This is not the colourful fantasy kingdom that generations of children have grown up with, though. Yuhiru is quickly sentenced to death and forced to travel alongside four convicts and their supervisor, leaving her little choice but to place her trust in people who have every reason to be distrusted. From that wonderfully grim premise comes a story filled with secrets, emotional manipulation and difficult decisions.

Welcome to a Very Different Oz

The first thing that stands out about OVER REQUIEMZ is how effectively it establishes its atmosphere. Oz feels less like a magical playground and more like a place where something has gone terribly wrong. The world is steeped in darkness, curses and political tension, with an oppressive sense that danger is never far away.

That makes Yuhiru’s position especially interesting. She is not an experienced warrior or a chosen hero who immediately understands what is happening around her. She is an outsider trying to survive in a world that seems determined to punish her for circumstances she barely understands. Her vulnerability gives the story an emotional anchor, particularly as she is forced to make decisions that could affect both her survival and her relationships.

The setting also allows OVER REQUIEMZ to play with familiar elements of the original Oz story without simply recreating them. Names, ideas and thematic echoes may feel familiar, but the game clearly wants to tell its own story. There is something fascinating about seeing a world that should feel whimsical transformed into something oppressive and dangerous.

Trust Is a Dangerous Game

At the centre of the experience are the four convicts travelling alongside Yuhiru. This is where the otome side of OVER REQUIEMZ really begins to shine, because these characters are not straightforward romantic options waiting patiently for the protagonist to choose them. They have histories, flaws, secrets and motivations that can make them difficult to understand.

That ambiguity is important. You are constantly encouraged to question whether somebody is genuinely helping Yuhiru or simply manipulating her for their own purposes. A seemingly kind conversation can take on a completely different meaning once another piece of information is revealed, and relationships can shift dramatically depending on the choices you make.

It gives the romance considerably more weight than simply selecting the correct dialogue option to make somebody fall in love with you. There are moments when affection and fear sit uncomfortably close together, and that tension makes the relationships much more compelling. When Yuhiru eventually begins to understand the people around her, those emotional breakthroughs feel earned.

Choices With Consequences

As you would expect from an otome visual novel, choices are the backbone of the experience. However, OVER REQUIEMZ makes those decisions feel particularly significant because the world itself is so dangerous. Choosing who to trust, how to respond to a threat, or whether to pursue a particular relationship can send the story in dramatically different directions.

The branching structure is one of the game’s greatest strengths, as it encourages you to replay routes rather than treating the first playthrough as the definitive version of events. Discovering that another decision could have revealed a completely different side of a character is exactly the sort of thing that makes a good visual novel difficult to put down.

There is also an element of tragedy running through many of these choices. OVER REQUIEMZ is not afraid to make players uncomfortable, and the consequences go beyond simply receiving a slightly different conversation. Some paths can lead somewhere genuinely bleak, which gives the happier moments considerably more impact.

Characters Worth Getting to Know

The cast is undoubtedly one of the game’s biggest attractions. Each of Yuhiru’s companions has enough personality and baggage to feel like more than a collection of romantic archetypes. Their individual stories gradually reveal why they ended up where they are, and the more you learn, the harder it becomes to judge them solely by their actions.

This is particularly effective because the game’s central theme is not about deciding who is good and who is evil. It is about understanding that people can be damaged, frightened or lost without necessarily being beyond redemption. The idea that nobody is truly lost, regardless of how far they have strayed, becomes increasingly important as Yuhiru’s journey progresses.

Yuhiru herself benefits enormously from this approach. She is not simply there to observe the more interesting characters around her. Her experiences shape her, and watching her grow more confident in her own decisions provides one of the story’s most satisfying arcs.

A Gothic Feast for the Eyes

Visually, OVER REQUIEMZ is exactly the sort of game that makes a strong first impression. The character artwork is beautifully detailed, with expressive faces and striking costumes that perfectly complement the darker fantasy setting. The Event CGs are equally impressive, often turning key emotional scenes into memorable visual moments.

There is a wonderful consistency to the art direction. The game can move from romantic intimacy to genuine menace without ever feeling as though its visual identity has changed. Colours, lighting and character designs all work together to create an atmosphere that is simultaneously beautiful and unsettling.

The presentation also benefits from strong Japanese voice acting. Good voice performances are particularly important in a visual novel because so much of the experience depends on subtle shifts in tone, hesitation and emotion. Here, the performances help bring the cast to life and make some of the more dramatic scenes hit considerably harder.

The Sound of a Broken Fairytale

The soundtrack deserves recognition too. OVER REQUIEMZ uses its music to reinforce each scene’s emotional temperature rather than simply filling the silence. Haunting melodies and sombre orchestral arrangements help sustain the feeling that something is fundamentally wrong with this version of Oz.

That musical restraint works particularly well in quieter scenes. Not every moment needs to sound dramatic, and the game understands that silence and subtlety can sometimes be more effective. When the soundtrack swells during a major revelation or emotional confrontation, the impact is consequently much stronger.

Made for Multiple Journeys

Visual novels live and die by their replayability, and OVER REQUIEMZ offers several tools to make returning to previous routes less painful. The chapter flowchart makes it easier to see where decisions have taken you, while quick save and load options reduce the frustration traditionally associated with revisiting lengthy sections.

The ability to jump back to earlier choices is particularly welcome. Anyone who has played a large otome visual novel will know the pain of realising that a decision made several hours ago probably sent you down the wrong route. Modern quality-of-life features allow the game to preserve its branching structure without forcing players to repeat quite as much material.

It is a small thing, but it shows the developers understand how people actually play games like this. The story remains the star, but the systems around it make exploring it much more enjoyable.

Love, Loss and Redemption

What ultimately makes OVER REQUIEMZ work is that, beneath its romance and gothic fantasy trappings, it has something genuine to say about people. Its characters are flawed, sometimes deeply so, but the game repeatedly asks whether someone should be defined entirely by their worst mistakes. That question gives the story considerably more emotional weight than you might expect from its deliberately theatrical premise.

Yuhiru’s journey becomes less about finding a perfect prince and more about understanding the imperfect people standing beside her. The relationships she develops are complicated precisely because nobody is entirely as they first appear. That makes the romantic elements feel much more meaningful, as affection grows alongside understanding rather than simply appearing because the player selected a few correct answers.

There are certainly moments when the story’s melodrama may feel excessive, particularly for players who prefer their visual novels grounded in reality. However, OVER REQUIEMZ is at its best when it embraces that theatricality. This is a gothic fairytale, after all, and sometimes gothic fairytales need to be gloriously dramatic.

Verdict

OVER REQUIEMZ is a beautifully presented and surprisingly thoughtful otome adventure that takes the familiar world of Oz and gives it a darker, more mature identity. Its branching story, morally complex characters and emotional relationships provide plenty of reasons to explore multiple routes, while the gorgeous artwork and haunting soundtrack make the journey a pleasure to experience.

What really stays with you, though, is its understanding of redemption. Yuhiru is surrounded by people who have made mistakes, committed terrible acts and lost their way, yet the game refuses to suggest that their stories are necessarily over. That central idea gives the adventure a warmth beneath all the darkness and prevents the bleak setting from becoming relentlessly miserable.

It will not be for everyone. Players looking for fast action or a traditional RPG will obviously find themselves staring at a lot of dialogue, while those who dislike melodramatic romance may struggle with some of its more theatrical moments. For fans of otome games and dark fantasy storytelling, however, there is plenty to love here.
