There is certainly admirable ambition in attempting to create a historical action-adventure around such a fascinating period, especially from a small independent production. Unfortunately, ambition alone cannot carry a game when the fundamental systems lack the depth and polish necessary to support it.

Taishogun: The Rise of Emperor aims to blend Japanese history with supernatural fantasy, placing players in the sandals of Hōjō Masako as she battles demons and rival clans for control of the nation. Sadly, while its premise holds genuine promise, the finished experience is let down by empty environments, unreliable combat and technical shortcomings that prevent its ambitions from ever becoming reality.

A promising idea let down by poor polish and underdeveloped systems. With significant improvements, it could evolve into something worthwhile, but in its current state, it’s a difficult recommendation.
